Type 5 healing: Broken Shell

The best thing Enneagram Type 7’s do for us Type 5’s is break us out of our shell. While a Type 6 might draw us out from behind our walls with gentle questions, the Type 7 smashes through to have some fun. Sometimes it is unwelcome and jarring, but to everyone’s surprise Type 5’s like to have fun too. No type is better at breaking us free than the Type 7. It is almost as if they sense that we might be fun if we were out from behind our walls. In my experience, that nudge or shove really makes the difference and it opens up so much experience.

Enneagram Type 5’s often earns the moniker, observer. That means we stay on the outside looking in, observing everything. The Type 7 won’t stand for people on the outside. They pull them in allowing us to not just observe, but to experience. If there is one thing I would communicate to my fellow Type 5’s, it’s that sometimes observation and investigation won’t do. You have to experience the world around you, or you will miss the real story, the real knowledge, the real information you need. If you are having trouble, find a Type 7. They will help you immensely.

Type 7 Healing: Slowing Down

Enneagram Type 5’s are by nature introspective, which is the one thing Type 7’s avoid the most. Why? Because that is where Enneagram Type 7’s stuff all their pain, heartache, frustration, and every other emotion that could be considered negative. They keep moving from experience to experience avoiding the fullness inside themselves. The problem is: one day it will catch up with them.

Leadership was recently described to me as a non-anxious presence. Few are less anxious about exploring inner turmoil than an Enneagram Type 5. Type 5’s provide consistent methodology and logic to sort through the messiness of emotions and inner chaotic thoughts by heading into our shell. We think through everything all the time able to minimize and re-open thoughts and feelings just like tabs on a web browser. This ability to be a non-anxious presence allows us to lead Enneagram Type 7’s into healthy self-discovery.

The Type 7 lifestyle looks exhausting from the outside, and eventually, it exhausts the Type 7. Taking time to slow down is rarely the Type 7 answer, but it is almost always the Type 5 answer.

Enneagram Line: In Health

Enneagram Type 7’s acquire Type 5 characteristics when they are healthy. Type 5’s are often most adept to lead them there, but they are not necessary. When a Type 7 reaches into the Type 5 characteristics, they find discipline, an ability to think through things, and contentment. These are traits rarely associated with the Type 7 who is unhealthily jumping from one party to the next. The Type 7 who is unhealthy is never content. These healthy aspects are a part of the gift we Type 5’s can give a Type 7 more readily. We just have to be willing to serve and come out of our shells more often.
