"It Is Well with My Soul"

Theology
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Sometimes it is not well with my soul. Sometimes my soul is in pain. Sometimes I don’t want it to be well with my soul. I have often thought about what it must be like to go through these pains without Christ. I have Christ and not everything is well with my soul.
I believe that it is ok for things to not be well with our souls. I do not think it is ok for us to linger in those positions. Christ constantly allows us to reorient our lives around something far bigger, greater, and longer than our rather short and small existence here. The Apostle Paul is a great example of someone who successfully reorients his life around Christ on a continual basis.
Today is not easy and tomorrow may not be better, but if I am allowing Christ to be the center of my life, His victories to be my victories and my victories to be His victories then maybe it can be well with my soul.
Mr. Spafford stumbled onto that truth when he wrote the song below. The story goes that it wasn’t well with his soul either at the time. I believe got there though, and thankfully he left us a song about how maybe we can get there too. I hope your day goes well and if it doesn’t, I hope it can be well with your soul.
“It is Well with My Soul”
Horatio Spafford
When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot you have taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soulIt is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh my soul
It is well, with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
And Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight
And the clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
